If you failed to make it to the Sky Auditorium on ANUC campus on May 12, then you definitely missed out on a whole lot of interesting, fun and refreshing activities.
The graduation dinner which began 7:30pm brought together graduands, lecturers, other school administrators and friends. It was about three hours of non-stop fun and excitement.
The opening prayer was said by Miss Serwaa after which Mr. Offei welcomed all the guests and people present to the dinner.
There was musical interlude as the other guests arrived. The music was in no way wasted as people danced to its tune. The MC, Mr. Semaha Kosi Kojo, thrilled everybody with his great sense of humour.
When it was time for the food to be served, Mr. Anane offered thanks to the Almighty God for His grace and blessings, after which the serving began. There was a lot to eat and drink.
The dance session was a marvelous sight to behold as both graduands all others present stepped on the dance floor. The Assistant H.O.D. of Business Administration, Mr. Eleazer Offei, surprised and caught the attention of everyone one as he danced his feet out. The surprised crowd could only dance along and cheer him. For Mama Thess of the Women Development Centre (W.D.C.), it was a double celebration because the dinner coincided with her birthday celebration.

They were led by Mr. Emmanuel Anane (Financial Risk Management lecturer), Mr. Eleazer Offei Fianko (Head of Business Administration Department), Mr. Bismark Offei (Commercial Banking management lecturer) and Mr. Twum Amankwah (Banking Law and Operations Lecturer)
The management team of SSNIT were impressed at the punctuality of the group and congratulated All Nations University as being the first institution amongst all tertiary institutions to be punctual for such a trip.
Mrs. Eva Amegashie and Mr. Gabriel of the strategic management rolled the mission of the school’s visit to a start by giving a brief history of SSNIT and the functions performed by them respectively. Issues such as the new contribution rate of 18.5%, investment of contributor’s premium were thoroughly brought to light by Mr. Gabriel. He also touched on the roles of the Strategic management department which included income replacement, implementation monitor, Operations management, financial management and preparation of reports for the Director General.
Mr. Joe Opoku, Head of Benefit department, an Actuarial scientist took over from a colleague by taking the group through benefit payments, old age benefits, invalidity benefits, survivals benefits and National Health Insurance benefits enjoyed by contributor to SSNIT.
Mr. Bismark Offei the Commercial Banking Lecturer made a suggestion that, SSNIT should consider embedding into their policy a temporal unemployment benefit, where persons will receive some amount of money in case they stopped working as a result of work problems, layoffs and collapse of organizations. Mr. Joe Opoku however stressed on the fact that this is a very expensive system to operate and will require an increment in the premium paid by contributors. He emphasized that if the general public agrees to increase the premium, this suggestion can be implemented successfully. Afterwards Mrs. Mary of the Human Resource Department stood in for the Human Resource director to give a detail presentation of the role played by the human resource department.
She stated the mode of recruiting people into the firm and also the expectations from the Interview panel.
Mr. Theophilus also from the Actuarial Department educated the group on how SSNIT uses Actuarial science models which are basically probability models to solve problems involving financial risk. He stated that in SSNIT the models are used to determine:
- How many people die
- What killed them and
- How to pay benefits.
The last speaker who heads The Portfolio department –Mr. Kingsley Obeng concluded the discussion by outling what SSNIT does with the contributions paid by people. The group learnt that SSNIT normally invests contributions into various portfolios, Such as Real Estate and fixed income. In investing three major things are considered. They are:
- Safety of investment
- Liquidity of investment and
- High yield of investment.
The group was served with minerals and pastries by SSNIT after the discussions. The last place visited was Zenith Bank. At the bank Mr. Johnson took the group through a brief history of Zenith bank and explained how financial risk is managed at Zenith bank. His explanation made students appreciate the study of Financial risk especially topics like the BASEL I and BASEL II Accord. These are models used by the banks to control and mange financial risk. After a one and half hour lecture, the group members were given souvenirs from Zenith bank to take home. These Souvenirs were in the form of customized chocolate for Zenith Bank.

DR DONKOR CALLS FOR REPRESENTATION OF PRIVATE UNIVERSITIES ON NAB, NCTE AND GETFund
The President of the All Nations University, Dr Samuel Donkor, has called for adequate representation of private universities on the National Accreditation Board (NAB), National Council for Tertiary Education (NCTE) and the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) board.
He said it would serve the interest of the public better if private universities were adequately represented on those boards because of the significant role they played in education in the country. Dr Donkor was speaking to the Daily Graphic to share his views on private tertiary education at the end of his term as President of the Conference of Heads of Private Universities, Ghana.
“We know GETFund was set up at a time private universities were not major players on the educational scene of the country, but that is no longer the case. Therefore, I call on the government to amend the laws to include private universities in the allocation of funds,” he said.“Private universities could obtain interest-free loans for physical development of hostels and other infrastructure, as well as for research, faculty development and scholarships, among others, to help improve quality and standards in private universities,” he added. He praised the past governments for the foresight to open up the field of higher education for private participation, adding that more of the young people who otherwise would have been denied the opportunity of university education due to limited spaces at public universities were now able to fulfil their dreams of acquiring the requisite skills for the competitive world of today.
Dr Donkor urged private universities to pay attention to science and technology education, saying while many of the private universities had ensured the availability of higher education in many areas of the humanities, the same could not be said of science and technology.
“We should not lose sight of the fact that science and technology education is the engine of economic and social development of the modern economy.
Whether it is competitiveness in the market place or addressing societal needs, it is technology that holds the key,” he said.
He cited Japan, South Korea and Singapore, as countries without significant natural resources yet they had become dominant forces in the world economy just by focusing on science and technological education and said Ghana should emulate those examples.
“I believe that the number one focus of the current NAB is to encourage more engineering and science-based education. Therefore, private tertiary institutions should endeavor to offer science-based and engineering programmes to promote the development of the nation and foster economic growth,” he stated.
Dr Donkor mentioned some initiatives which started during his tenure of office and urged his predecessor Professor James Hawkins, the Vice Chancellor of the Catholic University College to continue them.
The initiatives include an open dialogue with the NAB, NCTE and GETFund, the holding of meetings in different private universities and the league of private universities. He said regular interactive exchanges with these institutions would ensure greater representations on them, while a sports league would help to develop talents for the nation as well as discipline on campuses -GNA
