Department of Biomedical Engineering

The Department of Biomedical Engineering was established for the purpose of contributing to the growing health needs of Ghana in the area of hospital equipment and technical expertise. A Biomedical Engineer uses traditional engineering techniques to analyze and solve problems in Biology and Medicine, providing an overall enhancement of healthcare.

Our teaching and research focus for this department is to equip students with the knowledge required for effective contribution to national development in the areas of design of medical instruments, devices and software, and to conduct research to solve clinical problems.  Courses include medical instrumentation, imaging, microbiology, anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, and other combinations of engineering and medicine.

Laboratory and Equipment

In September 2008, the Department of Biomedical Engineering purchased the equipment required for the following laboratories:

          Bio-Transducers and Electrodes Laboratory

          Biomedical Instrumentation Laboratory

          Bio-Signal and Bio-Data Acquisition Laboratory

          Bio-Sensors and Simulation Laboratory

ECG, EMG, and EEG Systems Laboratory

In addition, the Department is in collaboration with the hospitals in the community to enable our students to get rich practical and hands-on experience in the design and management of hospital equipment.
